I was fortunate to participate in a school tour to the Western Front last April. We took Year 11 and 12 (plus a handful from Year 10) Ancient and Modern History students.
The tour was in two parts: Ancient first, Rome and Pompeii; then Modern, Paris to the Western Front, specifically Somme and Ypres. It was a sensational learning experience for students and teachers.
Logistically we also learnt  lot and have made modifications to next year's trip: Auschwitz, Berlin and Nuremberg replace the Western Front; more time in Pompeii; inclusion of Society and Culture.

Alternatively, you can contact the travel company we used, Academy Travel in Sydney. They are looking after our 2008 tour (and hopefully many more after that!).
These trips look financially daunting to students at first, but if you give them at least 12 months to save the $5-6,000 needed, it can be done.
