Australians on the Western Front
Permalink

I'm considering a study tour to France, Belgium and England to assess the contribution of Australian soldiers to WWI on the Western Front and the role played by the Australian delegation in the making of the Versailles Treaty.

I already have a list of battles in which the Australians fought, but I also want to get into contact with any experts on this particular topic so I can do some preparation before I venture overseas.

I'm also interested in completing some study on this topic in either of those countries but I'm not sure where to begin looking.

If anyone has any advice or information that would help me, or if they know of any experts who woud be willing to talk to me- then I would be forever grateful. I just want to be fully prepared before I leave.

Thanking you,

Melissa

Hi Melissa,
I would suggest you get in touch with Craig Laffin at St Mark's Catholic College, Stanhope Gardens. Phone number is (02) 88145633. Two years ago, Craig led the Nagle College tour for Year 11 and 12 students. He knows the Western Front extremely well and his father was a noted historian of World War I. Craig can also put you in touch with a range of knowledgeable people in France and Belgium, people who were extremely helpful to us and made the trip a rewarding experience for the students.

I have just returned from the Western Front and travelled with the Sydney Morning Herald. The historian was Dr. Jonathan King  who also writes for the paper. He knew a lot and has written a book on the WF. He also has great contacts- I met a woman of 98 who was a small girl when the Australians liberated Villers Bretonneaux. I suggest you try to reach him at the Herald. 99486529 Elizabeth.
