The 2009 marking centre notes for question 1 contain the following phrase, 'It is important to read the historian's work, not merely quotations...'. To what extent do the students need to read the actual work of the historians? For example, the extract from G R Elton in the book of readings runs to 21 pages, while that of Von Ranke runs to only 3 lines. Or is the expectation that I seek out a more substantive extract of Von Ranke's work? I would appreciate any thoughts people may have.
