HELP!!!! I am teaching Yr 12 Conflict in Europe 1935-45 for the International Study in Peace and Conflict and have now discovered that there are NO textbooks designed yet for the topic. You could say I have started writing my own book as I gather material from all over for my students. Is anyone else teaching this option? HELP...:

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd be brave and start a new topic.

I'm trying to put together an assessment task for Conflict in Europe. Has anyone taught this one yet? There are limited specific resources for this topic. It is very interesting but...

Can anyone help?

Thanks Debbie

The latest addition of Key Features (Dennett and Dixon) has an excellent chapter on this topic, the personality studies are also updated for the new syllabus.

Hi! I hope someone might be able to help me with the next modern history unit "Conflict in the Pacific". I am new to teaching modern history, especially at the HSC level and would be grateful of any help and advice that anyone can throw my way. This messageboard is such a great idea!

Hi Debra,
Our current HTA Modern History Study Guide has a chapter on the Conflict in the Pacific. It is the old syllabus, but still a good start. We are anticipating a new Modern History Study Guide towards the end of the year (so keep an eye out for it on our website).

Other new texts that I've heard is useful is Contested Spaces Conflict in the Pacific 1937-51 (2nd Ed - new syllabus) by Tom Cantwell -  I think McGraw Hill publishes it.

Good luck.

Hi Belinda and Debbie

I too am teaching Conflict in Europe with limited resources and have put together a booklet of lots of photocopies for my students (using less than 10% of each book of course to comply with copyright laws!).  I have used most of the books you've listed.  A good one also for the first dot point about causes is an old 3u text we had at school - 'International Relations between the wars' by Chase and Krantz.  The BBC website and the United States holocaust museum websites are good resources, as are the World At War videos/dvd's.

As far as assessments go...have put together a research/essay task about significant turning points in the course of the war i.e. based on the dot points in the syllabus about early battles, Nth Africa, Barbarossa etc.  The aim is for the students to do the intial fact finding/analysis for each other?!  Am happy to email a copy if you like (angjbee@hotmail.com).  I also have a program which I've just finished writing if you want it...one of the many tasks filling up the 'holidays'!?!

Another question - does anybody else find it concerning that our students could be asked to write an essay about appeasement  - which is an extension topic?  I find the overlap could be a little unfair.  Thoughts?

Cheers

Angela

Yep, seems to me that potentially there is a definite advantage for students taking the appeasement option in Extension. Even though the emphasis in the Ext syllabus is on "changing interpretations of the evidence relating to the policy of appeasement", the Ext students will obviously be much more familiar with the evidence itself and pre-war foreign relations. The same argument could also be made for the Churchill topic too. And perhaps JFK/Cold War options?

An equally important issue, I think, is unfair advantages within schools. In a mixed Extension class of ancient and modern students, selecting a "neutral" topic is important (as most teachers would be well aware). If my class was doing the appeasement option, my modern students would be very comfortable; but the ancient students would feel, rightly, that they were disadvantaged.

Hi i'm a year 12 student and our teacher has given us a question for our assessment that derives from the specimen paper - "Assess the impact of the conflict in Europe on civilians in Britain and Germany". Anyways, i'm just wondering, if any of you, if it's not that much trouble can provide me with a list of resources that focuses on this question. Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael,

The post above by Debbie should give you a useful starting point for texts. You can also go to the BBC site http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/war/wwtwo/ for an excellent selection of articles on the British homefront. The site has articles on all facets of WWII.

I too have decided to attack this new option with my year 12s. it flows very easily on from the germany national study (although makes for a very euro-centric view of modern History. I have to say that, judging by the number of views for this thread, it seems a number of people are taking this new option. While there is no shortage of resources, if anyone out there wants to write a textbook on this topic it would be greatly appreciated... hint hint!

It is planned that the new HTA MH Study Guide will have a comprehensive chapter on Conflict in Europe. It is planned that this book will be out late 2005/early 2006.

Hi,

Sorry this is a bit late but if you teach this subject again the following book is considered in academic circles as a modern classic that covers this period. It is also a fascinating read.

Mazower Mark, Dark Continent, Vintage Books, NY, 2000.

Chapter on Conflict in Europe in just published HTA Modern History Study Guide may be of interest to those looking for resources on this new topic. The study guide is available on from HTA's website publications page.
