G'day all. I am thinking of embarking on a new topic (for me) next year of Pericles. I'd appreciate any suggestions of books that may be useful for me to learn from?

Phil,  A good read - to get you started - is Donald Kagan's Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991). I would particularly recommend Terry Buckley's Aspects of Greek History 750-323 BC - A source-based approach (Routledge 1996) Excellent resource for the 5th century in general. Integrates essential narrative, analysis and selected ancient sources, esp. Thucydides, Aristotle and Plutarch.  Chapters 13 and 18 focus on Pericles' career and his democratic reforms - other chapters have useful information as well. A useful student resource is Gary Kenworthy's chapter on Pericles in the text Personalities from the Past, - (ed. J. Lawless). Gives you a range of relevant ancient and modern sources -and some key issues. All of these texts have bibliographies. A very useful internet resource -for all the ancient sources you need - is Paul Halsall's (Fordham University, New York) Internet Ancient History Source Book which can be found at http://www.forhdam.edu/halsall/ancient/asbook07.html.  Happy reading!

Have just noted a typo in the internet address site for the ancient sources. It should read: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ etc.

Due to a change in staffing our faculty has decided to change the personality study to Pericles and yours truly has landed the job. Any programming suggestions for a novice?

Not wanting to give Howard any support but teaching it for the first time this year I began with a grand narrative for a couple of lessons and then went into deeper studies. For example the Economy leading to the Building Program to the festivals and how the buildings were used. We finished by comparing and contrasting the different perspectives of the ancient writers, this also helped the revision of the other society based issues.

Phil and anyone else teaching Pericles and/or Athenian Society -
Can recommend the just published (2007 by Cambridge University Press)'Cambridge Companion to the Age of Pericles' ed. Loren J. Samons II (Prof. of Classical Studies at Boston Univ. - Abbeys Bookshop $55.00 paperback). Contains a good range of scholarly essays useful for both Pericles, the personality and for Athenian Society in the Age of Pericles. Most chapters include a wide range of primary sources and some new analysis of key issues. Chapter titles include 'Democracy and Empire' P.J. Rhodes; 'Athenian Religion in the Age of Pericles',Deborah Boedeker, 'The Athenian Economy', Lisa Kallet, 'Art and Architecture', Kenneth Lapatin and so on. A must for the school library - and then on more or less permanent loan to the History dept!
