The 2009 marking centre notes for question 1 contain the following phrase: 'It is important to read the historian's work, not merely quotations...'. To what extent do the students need to read the actual work of the historians? For example, the extract from G R Elton in the source book of historical readings runs to 21 pages, while that of Von Ranke runs only to 3 lines. Is it the expectation that I seek out a more substantive extract of Von Ranke's work? I would appreciate any thoughts on this people may have.
