Photos as primary sources

Hi


The following is a link to a photo which supposedly was taken at Verdun, however later proven to be staged.

This link is to the main page then click Link to Our choice of poignant war pictures, then scroll to Famous, but Untrue.


My daughter has to use primary sources for an assignment on the Western Front and I thought this would be interesting given that it has been used in the past in textbooks when it is not actually a true photo of war. She questioned if it could be a primary source, as it was staged.


We'd appreciate your thoughts.

Your daughter was right to question the source if it was staged. It still is a primary source, but as it was staged, it could lead to other questions and issues, eg questions of its relaibility. Also you could question it on the grounds as to why it was staged in the first place.  just because a source is a primary source, does not mean it has to be truthful.
